Types of Leaves in India 2022



Employees of any government or private organization are entitled to certain types of leaves to maintain work-life balance. There are 9 Types of Leaves in India that Most companies offer.


1. Holidays

Festival is an essential part of the Indian culture and is differs from state to state because every state or city has its own set of traditions for celebrating a particular festival. for ex: Diwali, Holi, Pongal, Eid, etc.


2. Sick Leave

Sick leave is paid time off from work that employees can stay at home to address health needs without LOP. Also, a medical certificate is required from a registered doctor in case of a long period of absence.


3. Compensatory Off

An employee can take Compensatory on a working day as compensation for working at the employer's request on a weekend or holiday. In other terms, the employee works overtime at request, then the employee takes off or compensates off.


4. Loss of Pay (LOP)

LOP for that employee who fully consumed their paid leaves. it means salary will be deducted for a particular day. Most of the companies cut 40% amount from your daily pay.


5. Bereavement Leave

Leave is provided to an employee when facing death in a family or close friend. There is no laws on compulsorily providing bereavement leave.


6. Privilege leaves

This is paid leave and this can be used for vacation, as rest-time, marriage leaves, or in case of medical crises.


7. Menstruation Leave

Many companies like Swiggy, Zomato, Byju’s, Mathrubhumi, etc provide mensural leave for their employees. Companies might give 1 or 2 days' leave each month. Menstrual leave was first got implemented in 1947 in Japan.


8. Maternity Leave

Leave can get leave for 26 Weeks based on different conditions. Also, you are eligible to get 12 Weeks of paid leaves for your 2nd and 3rd onwards.


9. Paternity Leave

The leave entitlement varies from 2 days to 4 weeks and depends entirely on the employer's policies.
